The exact date of the founding of Venice is unknown, but most believed it was originally built by roman refugees fleeing German and Hun invasions. The traditional founding is identified with the dedication of the first church given a conventional date of 421
The Republic of Venice was a major maritime power during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, as well as a very important center of commerce (especially silk, grain and spice trade) and art in the 13th century up to the end of the 17th century. This made Venice a wealthy city throughout most of its history. It is also known for its several important artistic movements, especially theRenaissance period. Venice has played an important role in the history of symphonic and operatic music, and it is the birthplace of Antonio Vivaldi.

This is the main Grand Canal, where all the largest buildings, palaces, and main sites are.
La Salute Church. Built by the survivor's of the 1630 Plague as a way of saying thank you to Mary for being saved.
Normally I don't like the inside of most old Catholic churches, they're so dark. But I liked this one, it was nice, light, and simple decorated.

Our Hotel was in an old Palace. GORGEOUS! (and reasonably priced too since it wasn't directly on a canal)
